German born later British citizen Jacques Mieses was born on 27 February 1865 in Leipzig. He got his British citizenship after World War II. His highest World Ranking is 9th (January 1921).  He was considered to be one of the best ten payers of the world in 1921. According to Chessmetrics his highest rating is 2660. He did not win World Champion title and never played World Championship matches either, but he was given FIDE Grandmaster title.

He participated in one Chess Olympiads in 1927 representing Germany. He placed sixth in team.

Interesting facts:

Mieses often used Scandinavian Defence and he perfected its theory in the 1900s.

He died on 23 February 1954 in London at the age of 88.
